Libyan Prime Minister Osama Hammad held a high-level meeting in Benghazi with the President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and his accompanying delegation. The talks were attended by several Libyan government ministers, focusing on strengthening African cooperation and bilateral relations.
During his speech, Hammad welcomed President Embaló and praised his role in African affairs. He emphasised the deep ties between Libya and Guinea-Bissau and the importance of enhancing partnerships across political, economic, and social sectors.
Hammad also commended Guinea-Bissau’s decision to open a consulate in Benghazi, describing it as a step towards closer diplomatic engagement. He acknowledged Guinea-Bissau’s support for Libya in international and African forums, particularly in promoting national reconciliation and lasting peace.
The Libyan Prime Minister criticised the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for not fully supporting African-led solutions to Libya’s crisis. He urged the new UN leadership to align with African efforts for a Libyan-led resolution, free from foreign interference.
Hammad further stressed the importance of African cooperation in tackling shared challenges, including security threats, economic development, counterterrorism, and irregular migration. He reaffirmed Libya’s commitment to working closely with the House of Representatives and the Libyan National Army to enhance regional stability.
In response, President Embaló expressed his well wishes for the Libyan people and voiced his hope for free and fair elections. He reiterated the African Union’s commitment to resolving Libya’s crisis and highlighted his personal support for a Libya-led solution.
The two leaders agreed to establish ministerial committees to coordinate cooperation across various sectors. President Embaló also expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation during their visit.
