Libyan security forces have arrested three individuals, including a Libyan national, on charges of human trafficking and migrant smuggling in northern Kufra. The suspects were allegedly part of a criminal network responsible for detaining 76 migrants in harsh conditions. Authorities also discovered a mass grave containing the remains of 28 victims near the site.
The operation followed extensive intelligence work by the Anti-Illegal Migration Authority, which led to a coordinated raid with the support of the Subul Al-Salam Brigade. The security forces successfully freed the detained migrants and secured the area for further investigation.
The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched a formal inquiry into the case. Forensic experts have been called in to examine the bodies, while survivors are providing testimonies to assist in the ongoing investigation. Officials have vowed to track down other members of the trafficking network and bring them to justice.
Human trafficking remains a serious issue in Libya, which serves as a key transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe. International organisations have repeatedly raised concerns about the exploitation of migrants by criminal networks operating within the country.
Authorities have urged regional and international cooperation to combat human trafficking and prevent further tragedies. The Libyan government has also reiterated its commitment to dismantling smuggling networks and protecting vulnerable migrants from abuse.
This latest crackdown highlights the ongoing security challenges Libya faces as it seeks to curb illegal migration and combat organised crime. Officials stress that further operations are planned to dismantle trafficking networks and enhance border security.
