Belgasim Haftar, Director General of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, met with Turkish Ambassador Güven Begeç to discuss ongoing and future reconstruction projects in Libya.

The meeting focused on infrastructure development, urban renewal, and economic cooperation, particularly in eastern Libya.

During the talks, Ambassador Begeç praised the newly reopened Benghazi International Stadium, calling it a major achievement.

He described the design and execution as world-class and said the opening ceremony was one of the most impressive in Africa.

The stadium, closed for years due to war damage and neglect, has now been fully renovated and certified by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The grand reopening featured an exhibition match with football legends like Roberto Carlos, Michael Owen, John Terry, Marco Materazzi, and Samuel Eto’o.

Turkey has played a controversial role in Libya, primarily supporting the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU), led by Abdul Hamid Dbaiba.

Ankara has provided military and logistical support to factions in western Libya, leading to ongoing tensions with the eastern authorities.

In January 2024, Ambassador Begeç visited eastern Libya and met with House of Representatives Speaker Ageela Saleh, Benghazi’s local authorities, and senior officials. Discussions focused on economic cooperation, aviation, and infrastructure projects.

Libya remains politically divided. The Tripoli-based government controls the west, while the eastern administration, backed by the House of Representatives, governs the east.

The struggle for control over oil revenues and state resources has stalled national reconciliation. As foreign players seek influence, economic partnerships are emerging as a tool for diplomacy.

Turkey’s deepening ties with eastern Libya could shape future economic and political dynamics
