Mousa Al-Koni, Deputy Head of Libya’s Presidential Council, awarded the Order of Good Service to Dr Rania Al-Khouja, Director-General of the Tripoli Eye Hospital, recognising her exceptional contributions to ophthalmology in Libya.

In a statement, the Presidential Council noted that this is the first time the honour has been awarded since 2011, highlighting Dr Al-Khouja’s efforts in leading medical teams that have provided vital eye care services to tens of thousands across Libya.

Al-Koni praised Dr Al-Khouja’s leadership, stating that her ability to manage the hospital as a unified team has achieved results that even major institutions have struggled to match. He also commended her role in localising eye treatment, reducing the need for Libyan patients to seek medical care abroad.

Expressing her gratitude, Dr Al-Khouja described the award as a collective achievement, crediting the dedicated medical staff of the hospital. She also emphasised that Al-Koni’s visit and recognition serve as a motivational boost for further efforts to improve Libya’s healthcare sector.

Al-Khouja has gained significant recognition on Libyan social media platforms, particularly for her efforts to expand specialised eye care services. Last month, she met Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah to discuss advancements in Libya’s medical sector, including initiatives aimed at enhancing local treatment capabilities.

In 2024, the Tripoli Eye Hospital conducted 185,000 medical consultations and performed 12,887 eye surgeries, including 7,393 major operations. During a recent hospital event, Al-Khouja proudly stated, “We have broken the private sector’s monopoly on eye surgery, and Libya now has hundreds of skilled ophthalmic surgeons across all specialities.”

During his visit, Al-Koni toured several hospital departments and praised the cutting-edge technology being used for eye treatments, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening Libya’s public healthcare system.
