Egypt Reaffirms its Commitment to Libya’s Sovereignty

On Sunday, Libyan Parliament Speaker Ageela Saleh reaffirmed Egypt’s firm opposition to foreign interference in Libya’s internal affairs.

Speaking from Cairo, he praised Egypt’s diplomatic efforts in resolving the Gaza crisis and its ongoing commitment to stability in Libya. He stressed that Egypt has never abandoned the Libyan people and continues to play a vital role in supporting Libya’s sovereignty and political process.

A high-level consultative meeting took place in Cairo today, bringing together 96 members of the Libyan House of Representatives and 75 members of the High Council of State.

Discussions focused on ways to advance the political process and resolve Libya’s institutional divisions. Participants thanked Egypt for hosting the dialogue and reaffirmed their commitment to a Libyan-led solution that ensures a peaceful transition of power.

The final statement from the meeting emphasized that Libya’s political process must remain fully Libyan-owned through its official institutions.

It called for continued engagement between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State and the implementation of the outcomes of the Tripartite Cairo Meeting, held under the Arab League’s supervision on March 10, 2024.

The statement also highlighted the importance of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) but insisted that its role must remain within its original mandate—to support Libyan institutions and not interfere in political decision-making. Participants stressed that any international involvement must respect Libya’s sovereignty and help facilitate a peaceful, Libyan-led resolution to the crisis.

Egypt has played a central role in Libya’s political crisis, advocating for unity and reconciliation among Libya’s rival factions. Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has remained deeply divided, with competing governments, militias, and foreign interventions prolonging instability.

Cairo has hosted multiple rounds of negotiations between Libya’s rival factions, aiming to bridge political divides and establish a stable governance structure. Egypt has particularly emphasized the importance of elections as a path to lasting stability.
