The Chairman of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh, held talks on Monday with the British Ambassador to Libya, Martin Longden, to review the commission’s preparedness for the second phase of municipal council elections. The meeting took place at HNEC’s headquarters in Tripoli and focused on advancing Libya’s electoral process.
According to a statement published by HNEC on its official Facebook page, discussions centred on the ongoing preparations and the commission’s efforts to create the necessary conditions to ensure free, fair, and credible elections. Al-Sayeh underlined the commission’s commitment to maintaining transparency and integrity in all phases of the electoral process, aligning with the aspirations of the Libyan people for democratic governance.
Ambassador Longden praised the commission’s dedication and the progress achieved so far in organising the municipal elections. He reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s support for Libya’s democratic transition and expressed readiness to offer technical and advisory assistance to the commission. This support, he noted, is intended to enhance HNEC’s operational capacity and ensure that the elections are conducted in an environment of fairness and accountability.
The meeting comes at a critical time for Libya, as the country continues to face political fragmentation and institutional divisions. Nonetheless, the municipal elections are seen as a vital step towards restoring local governance, increasing public participation, and laying the groundwork for broader national elections in the future.
The UK has been an active partner in supporting Libya’s political and electoral processes, often calling for inclusive solutions that uphold stability and the rule of law.
