Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, held a key meeting with the Head of the Audit Bureau, Khaled Shakshak, to discuss mechanisms for improving the Bureau’s operations and strengthening its role in overseeing public funds.
The meeting, which took place in the eastern city of Qubah, focused on enhancing financial transparency and accountability across state institutions. Both parties reviewed the challenges facing the Audit Bureau and explored ways to overcome them through institutional development and improved coordination.
The two sides emphasised the importance of official reports issued by the Audit Bureau in promoting transparency and upholding public accountability. They also discussed adopting advanced oversight mechanisms aligned with international professional standards to ensure better governance and financial integrity.
The discussions aimed to bolster the Bureau’s role in safeguarding public resources and ensuring that financial management serves the national interest.
In a separate meeting earlier, Speaker Saleh also met with the Acting Chairman of the National Oil Corporation (NOC), Masoud Suleiman. The discussions focused on overcoming challenges facing the implementation of development projects in the oil sector and strategies to boost production.
They examined the operational framework of the NOC and reviewed the main obstacles hindering progress, reaffirming the need for continued support to Libya’s most vital economic sector.
Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.
Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.
The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.
The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.
Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
