Malta’s Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the deployment of a specialized team from the Civil Protection Department to Libya, aiming to assist in uncovering the causes behind a series of mysterious fires that have affected dozens of homes in the Al-Asabaa municipality over recent weeks.
The support mission is part of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, which has previously enabled Malta to provide humanitarian aid during emergencies in Greece, Turkey, and Libya.
Malta’s Minister for Home Affairs, Byron Camilleri, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in crisis response, stating:
“The Civil Protection Department reaffirms its vital role—not only in saving lives at home in Malta, but also in extending support and expertise on behalf of the Maltese government to nations in need.”
Since February, unexplained fires have erupted in multiple homes across Al-Asabaa, raising concerns among residents and prompting the formation of investigative committees. However, despite initial inquiries and a recent decline in fire incidents, the root causes remain undetermined.
The Maltese delegation comprises four officers with expertise in fire investigation and emergency response, signaling Malta’s commitment to regional stability and humanitarian assistance.
