On Tuesday, Libya’s Presidential Council President Mohamed Al Mnifi met with UN Special Representative Hanna Tetteh and her deputy Stephanie Khoury in Tripoli to discuss the latest developments in Libya’s political transition, security landscape, and economic situation.

During the meeting, Al Mnifi reaffirmed Libya’s support for the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and emphasized the importance of continuing close coordination to advance a comprehensive political settlement that would lead to national elections. He welcomed the role of the UN in promoting stability and guiding the country toward institutional unity and democratic legitimacy.

Tetteh provided Al Mnifi with a detailed briefing on her recent consultations with Libyan and international stakeholders, as part of UNSMIL’s mission to support a Libyan-led political process. Both sides agreed on the need to push forward with national reconciliation efforts and to create an inclusive environment that allows for the successful conduct of elections.

The conversation also focused on Libya’s financial and economic outlook. Al Mnifi stressed the importance of financial transparency and accountability, calling for better public disclosure of economic data to strengthen public trust and ensure efficient oversight of public spending. He highlighted the need for integrated and cooperative institutions that can deliver services and address economic imbalances.

Human rights and migration were also discussed. Al Mnifi and the UN representatives reviewed the need to implement UN Security Council resolutions and support sanctions enforcement, particularly against those involved in organized crime, smuggling, and human trafficking. They underlined the importance of respecting Libya’s national laws while continuing to work jointly on comprehensive solutions to manage migration and protect vulnerable populations.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to maintaining momentum in the political process and reinforcing international cooperation to stabilize Libya and support its democratic transition.
