On Thursday, Libya’s High National Elections Commission issued a final call for citizens to register in the national voter roll ahead of the upcoming municipal council elections.

In a statement, the Commission stressed that Sunday, April 13, 2025, is the absolute deadline for voter registration and confirmed that the deadline will not be extended under any circumstances.

The Commission urged all eligible Libyans to take immediate action and ensure they are registered to participate in this vital phase of local elections. The registration period is part of the second wave of municipal elections scheduled for this year and represents a key step in rebuilding Libya’s democratic institutions at the local level.

It also reminded citizens that registering as a voter is not only a right but a necessary step to guarantee active participation in shaping local leadership. Municipal councils play a central role in addressing everyday needs such as public services, infrastructure, and community development. Without registration, citizens will be unable to cast their votes or influence local decision-making.

Additionally, the Commission also issued a strong reminder to all candidates running in the municipal elections. Candidates are required to resolve any pending legal or procedural issues before the same April 13 deadline. Failure to comply with legal conditions could result in exclusion from the race.

The Commission emphasized that compliance with legal standards is a non-negotiable requirement for anyone wishing to contest in the elections.

These municipal elections are seen as a crucial part of Libya’s broader efforts to restore legitimacy to local institutions, expand civic participation, and support more transparent governance across the country. The Elections Commission called on all citizens and candidates to act quickly and responsibly before the deadline passes.
