The UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Anwar Gargash, welcomed the maritime border agreement signed between Egypt and Greece.
On his Twitter account, Gargash said “the signing of the maritime border demarcation agreement between Egypt and Greece, is a victory for international law over the law of the jungle.”
“The international legal system is the firm foundation that governs relations between states, and preserves peace and security. Civilised nations may not legitimise political intrusion at the expense of the foundations that govern international relations,” he added.
On Thursday, Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, stated that Egypt and Greece have signed an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) agreement. In a joint press conference, Shoukry said that the agreement aims to enable Egypt and Greece to maximize the benefit from the natural resources found within the EEZs. He pointed out that the agreement touches upon ongoing oil and gas cooperation, as the two countries are members of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum.
The Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Dendias, said the agreement was the opposite of the maritime demarcation pact between Turkey and the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA). This agreement has been dismissed as illegal by a number of countries in the region.
