Libya’s Ministry of Interior, under the Government of National Unity (GNU), has confirmed the seizure of a security vehicle involved in a disturbing incident where fans were deliberately run over near the Sports City in Tripoli. The Ministry described the act as an “individual behaviour” and pledged immediate legal action against those responsible.
In a statement released on Facebook late Monday, the Ministry said Acting Interior Minister Emad Trabelsi had ordered an urgent and thorough investigation. “The vehicle and its driver have been taken into custody, and legal procedures are now underway,” the statement added.
The incident reportedly occurred after a football match between Al-Ahly Tripoli and Al-Swehly, part of the first round of Libya’s Premier League Championship Six. Videos shared online showed a vehicle, allegedly from the Central Support Unit affiliated with the Ministry, ramming into fans gathered outside the stadium.
Al-Ahly Tripoli Club issued a statement confirming that some of its supporters were subjected to live fire and vehicular assault by the Central Support Unit. The footage sparked outrage online, with many Libyans demanding accountability and justice for the victims.
The Interior Ministry expressed “deep regret” over the incident and reiterated that such behaviour does not reflect the Ministry’s professional standards or policies. “We will not tolerate any violation of citizens’ rights and will pursue justice for those harmed,” the statement said.
The Ministry also noted that the altercation began after some fans attacked police patrols, prompting security forces to attempt a retreat from the area. It called on the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information until investigations are concluded.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and vowed to keep the public informed of any developments regarding the incident.
