Libya’s Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, held a meeting with French Special Envoy to Libya, Paul Soler, to discuss pressing political priorities, foremost among them the need to preserve Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
The meeting also covered the urgent necessity of holding national presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
Paul Soler, who was appointed as Special Envoy to Libya by French President Emmanuel Macron in March 2018, reaffirmed during the meeting France’s strong commitment to supporting a peaceful Libyan-led transition.
He underscored the importance of completing the constitutional framework required to enable elections that reflect the will of the Libyan people.
Soler’s latest meeting with Speaker Saleh follows a series of high-level talks he conducted in Libya in September of the previous year, during which he engaged with key political stakeholders to encourage dialogue and national reconciliation.
At the time, the French Embassy in Libya released a statement confirming that Soler had reiterated Paris’s unwavering support for Libya’s sovereignty and the urgency of holding elections without further delay.
For his part, Saleh emphasized the Parliament’s role in finalizing the legal and constitutional basis for elections, while also reiterating that the Libyan people must be the ones to choose their leaders through a transparent and inclusive democratic process. He welcomed France’s support and engagement, noting that international backing for electoral readiness and institutional legitimacy is essential for overcoming Libya’s prolonged transitional period.
