60 Cancer Patients Examined During Benghazi Medical Workshop

Benghazi Medical Center hosted the first specialized workshop under Libya’s national initiative to localize cancer treatment, with the participation of a high-level medical team from the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The Egyptian delegation, led by Senior Oncology Surgeon Dr. Hossam El-Foll and Oncology Specialist Dr. Hassan Metwally, was welcomed by the General Director of Benghazi Medical Center, Mohamed Madhi, and the Chairman of the Higher Committee for Treatment Localization, Suleiman Nashad.

During the first day of the workshop, 60 oncology patients were examined, and six cases were admitted for delicate surgical operations.

The workshop, which also included the participation of several young Libyan medical professionals, aims to enhance the skills of local medical teams and alleviate the burden on cancer patients within Libya.

The overarching goal of the project is to localize cancer treatment services inside the country, improve the expertise of Libyan doctors in highly specialized fields, and ultimately raise the quality of healthcare services provided to citizens.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.

Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.

The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.

The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.

Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
