Libya’s Attorney General’s Office has revealed the results of investigations into the fatal shooting of Brigadier Ali Ramadan Al-Riyani, who was killed during an armed robbery at his home in the Al-Khalla area of Tripoli on Sunday morning.
According to an official statement posted on the Attorney General’s official Facebook page on Tuesday, three armed assailants broke into the brigadier’s residence intending to carry out a robbery. The attackers threatened his family at gunpoint, prompting the officer to respond in defence of his household.
The investigation concluded that Brigadier Al-Riyani opened fire on the intruders, killing all three. However, he sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the confrontation and later died from his injuries.
The Attorney General’s Office confirmed that the family members involved in defending themselves were released after completing the required legal procedures, citing self-defence.
Eyewitnesses and local sources stated that the brigadier heroically managed to eliminate the attackers before succumbing to his wounds. The tragic incident has sparked public attention and sympathy for the family.
In response to speculation circulating on social media, the Department of Operations and Judicial Security denied any links between the attackers and the judicial police. The department condemned what it described as “paid pages” spreading misinformation aimed at defaming the judicial police and its leadership.
The incident has raised concerns over ongoing security challenges in Tripoli, despite broader efforts to stabilise the capital. It has also renewed discussions about the need for improved home security and police response systems in residential areas.
