US Call for Political Restraint in Libya

US Call for Political Restraint in Libya

The United States has urged all Libyan political and security actors to refrain from unilateral actions that could destabilise the fragile situation in the country.

In a statement released by the US Embassy in Libya on Facebook, Special Envoy Richard Norland emphasised the importance of building consensus around a pathway to national elections. “Progress achieved in the economic and security tracks is paving the way for political advancement. Every opportunity must be seized to forge agreement on a roadmap towards elections,” Norland stated.

His remarks come amid rising concern from the international community about recent developments in Libya’s political and security landscape.

Earlier, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) voiced alarm over escalating tensions and potential unilateral actions by key Libyan factions. In a strongly worded statement, the mission warned against moves that could derail the ongoing dialogue process and jeopardise the already fragile peace.

UNSMIL called on all parties to commit to the spirit of cooperation and to avoid any steps that may disrupt national reconciliation or undermine stability. The mission reiterated that a sustainable solution to Libya’s crisis requires inclusive dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to previously agreed frameworks.

The international concern follows reports of increased political manoeuvring and military posturing in key parts of Libya, threatening to derail the momentum gained through recent economic and security improvements.

Despite calls for unity and elections, Libya remains divided between rival administrations in the east and west, with limited progress on constitutional arrangements or a unified electoral law.

As pressure mounts, both US and UN officials are pushing for a renewed political process that avoids fragmentation and focuses on national interests.
