On Thursday, a group of 112 members of the Libyan Parliament issued a statement in response to widely circulated reports alleging that individuals with criminal records may be deported from the United States to Libya.
The lawmakers warned that any acceptance, coordination, or cover-up related to the entry of such individuals would constitute a betrayal of the nation, a crime of high treason warranting full prosecution under Libyan law.
The parliamentarians emphasized that Libya’s sovereignty must not be compromised under any pretext. They described the potential arrival of deported criminals as a direct threat to national security and an unacceptable violation of Libya’s dignity and independence.
They demanded immediate and full accountability for anyone involved in facilitating or enabling such transfers.
The MPs formally called on the Attorney General to launch a comprehensive, urgent, and transparent investigation into the alleged deportations. They stressed the need to determine whether any official channels or actors have been involved, directly or indirectly, in a process that could severely undermine Libya’s internal stability and international standing.
Furthermore, the statement urged all responsible national forces, political, military, and institutional, to act swiftly in defense of Libya’s sovereignty. The lawmakers warned against remaining passive in the face of what they described as “systematic tampering” with the nation’s security and legal integrity.
The group also reiterated the importance of continuous parliamentary oversight, calling on the House of Representatives or its presidency to remain in open session until there is full clarity regarding the fate of MP Ibrahim Al Darsi and all cases affecting national security.
The statement comes amid public outcry over recent videos allegedly showing Al Darsi in inhumane detention conditions, and growing distrust in institutions’ ability to protect elected officials.
In closing, the signatories stressed that the time for silence has passed, and that safeguarding the Libyan state requires immediate and unified action at all levels of governance.
