Libya & Russia Launch Economic Forum to Expand Strategic Cooperation

The Libya–Russia Economic Forum officially opened Thursday in the Russian city of St. Petersburg, signaling a new phase of economic engagement between the two countries.

The event is organized under the patronage of Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and includes the participation of a formal Libyan delegation comprising government officials, economic institutions, and prominent business leaders from both countries.

The forum is designed to enhance economic and trade cooperation and explore strategic partnerships across key sectors such as energy, industry, agriculture, maritime transport, and infrastructure. It also aims to create a platform for building long-term collaborations that serve both national economies.

The multi-day event features a series of specialized working sessions and bilateral meetings between Libyan and Russian representatives from the public and private sectors. Libyan officials and business leaders are expected to present major investment opportunities and national development projects, inviting Russian counterparts to take part in Libya’s rebuilding and economic diversification efforts.

Several preliminary agreements and memoranda of understanding are anticipated to be signed during the forum. These agreements will lay the groundwork for collaborative initiatives and mutual investments in sectors of shared interest.

This forum forms part of a broader Libyan strategy to diversify international partnerships and attract foreign investment to fuel economic recovery, particularly in post-conflict reconstruction and development. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has emphasized the importance of building economic diplomacy with key global partners, and Russia remains a central player in this effort.

Held over a full week, the forum reflects a mutual interest in expanding cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic ties, with a focus on creating sustainable investment opportunities and unlocking new economic potential in both countries.
