The Arab Organization for Human Rights in Libya has expressed deep concern over the reported disappearance of prominent civil society activist Abdelmonem Al-Marimi, who played a key role in recent anti-government protests in Tripoli. His alleged abduction occurred on Monday in the city of Surman.

According to a statement by the organization, Al-Marimi was forcibly taken from his vehicle in broad daylight while accompanied by his young children, who were left behind in the car. The group described the incident as a “deliberate kidnapping”, citing prior threats the activist reportedly received by phone.

The human rights group has demanded Al-Marimi’s immediate release and safe return, calling on authorities to take urgent action. It also condemned the rising wave of kidnappings targeting civilians, activists, and humanitarian workers across Libya, stressing that no one is immune.

“Libya is currently experiencing a state of lawlessness and chaos, driven by the unchecked operations of armed groups who tighten their grip on the country,” the statement read.

The organization urged Libya’s security services and the Public Prosecutor’s Office to launch a transparent investigation into the incident and to ensure accountability.

Al-Marimi’s disappearance has raised alarm among civil rights groups and local observers, particularly due to his visible role in calls for the removal of the outgoing Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli.
