The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for an immediate de-escalation in the capital, Tripoli, amid growing reports of military mobilisation in and around the city. The mission warned that any escalation risks triggering renewed armed clashes, particularly in densely populated areas.
In a statement, UNSMIL stressed the importance of all parties refraining from the use of force and avoiding actions or rhetoric that could inflame the fragile security situation. The mission reiterated that the protection of civilians and their property must remain a top priority, warning that violations against civilians would lead to accountability under international law.
UNSMIL referenced the 17 May UN Security Council statement, which urged all political and security actors in Libya to uphold their legal responsibilities to protect civilians. The mission reaffirmed its commitment to de-escalation efforts and said it would continue to engage with all concerned parties to contain tensions.
UNSMIL also called for the urgent implementation of security arrangements devised by the Ceasefire Monitoring and Security Arrangements Committees. It expressed full support for both bodies and urged the immediate withdrawal of all recently deployed forces in Tripoli.
“The only path to lasting peace and stability in Tripoli and across Libya is dialogue, not violence,” the mission stated, appealing to all actors to prioritise national responsibility and reason over confrontation.
This latest statement comes as fears grow over potential conflict in the capital, which has experienced multiple outbreaks of violence between rival armed factions in recent years. UNSMIL’s warning highlights the international community’s concern over the fragile nature of Libya’s security situation and the importance of restraint by all actors.
