Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli received its first flight from Syrian Air early Monday, marking the official resumption of direct air travel between Libya and Syria. The milestone represents a significant step in restoring air connectivity and strengthening economic and tourism ties between the two countries.
The inaugural flight was greeted by the airport’s General Manager along with several government, technical, and security officials. The Syrian aircraft landed in the early hours, highlighting the growing momentum towards regional integration.
According to the General Manager of Mitiga Airport, the return of scheduled Syrian flights will greatly facilitate the movement of citizens and open up broader international travel options. “This resumption supports not just connectivity but broader cooperation in trade, tourism, and civil aviation,” he said.
Attendees at the welcome ceremony hailed the occasion as a positive signal that Libya is reopening to more international carriers. The move is expected to breathe life back into the aviation sector and enhance Mitiga’s status as a key air transport hub in North Africa.
The relaunch of Syrian Air routes comes amid improving diplomatic and logistical coordination between Tripoli and Damascus. Officials on both sides hope that stronger civil aviation ties will pave the way for further cooperation in other strategic sectors.
