Libya secured its first medals at the African Weightlifting Championship as young lifter Mahmoud Hamed claimed three bronze medals in the 56kg category. The event, hosted in Accra, Ghana, marked a strong start for the Libyan delegation competing in the youth and junior divisions.

Hamed’s performance was hailed as a significant milestone for Libya’s sports sector. Winning three bronze medals on the opening day of the competition underscored both his talent and the steady progress of weightlifting programmes in the country.

Sports officials and fans congratulated the young athlete, describing his success as a source of pride for all Libyans. Local sporting institutions also highlighted the importance of such achievements in inspiring future generations and promoting youth participation in competitive sports.

The African Weightlifting Championship for youth and juniors brings together athletes from across the continent, including Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa. Organised under the supervision of the African Weightlifting Federation, the competition aims to raise performance standards, discover emerging talents, and prepare them for major international tournaments, including the Youth Olympic Games and World Championships.

For Libya, Hamed’s victories serve as more than sporting triumphs. They symbolise resilience and ambition in a sector often overshadowed by political and economic challenges. The medals also provide a platform for Libyan weightlifting to enhance its continental ranking while giving young lifters valuable experience in professional competitive environments.

Observers note that participation in such events strengthens Libya’s sporting diplomacy by fostering regional ties and showcasing the potential of its rising athletes. With further investment in youth programmes, Libya could secure a stronger presence in future African and global tournaments.
