Libya’s General Authority for Communications and Informatics has held talks with Huawei Technizon Libya, addressing the legal and regulatory framework governing international companies in the country’s telecom sector.

During the meeting, the authority underscored the importance of compliance with Law No. 22 of 2010 on telecommunications and its executive regulations, describing it as the central reference point for all stakeholders in the industry. Officials stressed that adherence to the legal framework was crucial for maintaining order and transparency in the sector.

Huawei, which has operated in Libya for more than two decades, reaffirmed its commitment to national regulations. The company highlighted its role in expanding telecom infrastructure and supporting national capacity-building programmes since the early 2000s. It noted its contributions to the rollout of third and fourth generation technologies in partnership with local operators.

The company insisted it was ready to cooperate closely with the authority to ensure its projects remain aligned with Libyan laws and regulatory requirements.

The talks come after the authority announced the suspension of Huawei’s operations in Libya. The decision, made public in a recent statement, cited violations of legal and regulatory provisions and alleged contracts signed with unauthorised local entities. The authority said the suspension was effective immediately, pending further review.

Huawei’s role in Libya’s telecommunications has been significant, with its technology central to mobile networks and internet development over the past 20 years. However, the latest regulatory measures signal growing scrutiny over the activities of foreign firms in the country’s vital telecom sector.
