The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) has announced the preliminary results of the municipal council elections for the second group of municipalities under the administration of the Electoral Office in Zawiya. The announcement was made by Commission Board Member Abdelhakim Al-Shaab at the Commission’s Media Centre.
Al-Shaab confirmed that the results cover the municipalities of Central Zawiya, Middle Zawiya, Western Zawiya, Northern Zawiya, Sorman, Sabratha, and Bir Al-Ghanem. The supplementary vote took place on 23 August after being postponed due to an attack on the Zawiya Electoral Office on 15 August.
In his statement, Al-Shaab described the electoral process as a “historic day,” praising citizens for their strong turnout. “You were the heroes of this democratic day,” he said. “Your participation showed the world that your will cannot be defeated and that your voice is the true power upon which nations are built.”
He stressed that the elections were conducted with enthusiasm and integrity in a democratic environment monitored by observers and candidate representatives. Al-Shaab added that regardless of the results, the real winner was Libya itself. “We have succeeded in laying the foundations for a democratic process worthy of our country,” he said.
The Commission also announced that the appeal period for the preliminary results in the listed municipalities will begin on 27 and 28 August.
Al-Shaab praised the efforts of staff, committees, candidates, voters, the media, and security forces who contributed to the success of the elections. He said their combined work ensured that the process was credible, transparent, and reflective of the people’s will.
