EU Highlights Need for Closer US Coordination on Libya

The European Union’s ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, has stressed the importance of continued coordination and consultation with the United States on political, security, and economic developments in the country. He made the remarks during a meeting with Jeremy Berndt, the US Embassy’s chargé d’affaires to Libya.

In a post on his official account on X, cited by the Libyan News Agency, Orlando expressed his satisfaction with the exchange of views with the American envoy regarding key Libyan files. He highlighted the significance of joint dialogue to ensure a common understanding of challenges and opportunities facing Libya at this critical stage.

The EU ambassador underlined that he and Berndt agreed to keep the channels of communication open and strengthen coordination in close cooperation with the United Nations Special Representative for Libya, Hanna Tetteh. Orlando said such collaboration is vital to support the political process, encourage consensus among Libyan actors, and advance efforts for peace and stability.

Observers note that the EU and the US remain key international stakeholders in Libya, particularly in efforts to facilitate elections, unify institutions, and address security concerns. The meeting between Orlando and Berndt comes amid ongoing international calls for Libyan leaders to commit to a clear electoral roadmap and engage in genuine dialogue to end years of political division.

Orlando reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Libyans in achieving stability and prosperity, stressing that the bloc will continue to work alongside international partners and the United Nations to help safeguard Libya’s sovereignty and unity.

The emphasis on stronger EU-US cooperation reflects a wider strategy by Western powers to maintain active engagement in Libya, ensuring that the country’s fragile progress towards national reconciliation is not undermined by continued divisions or external interference.
