Misrata has taken another step toward reconnecting with the world as Turkish Airlines officially launched its first flights to and from Misrata International Airport. The carrier becomes the second foreign airline to operate in the city, joining EgyptAir in linking Misrata directly to international destinations.
The inaugural flight on Tuesday was marked with an official ceremony at Misrata Airport, attended by Libya’s Minister of Transportation Mohamed Al-Shahoubi, the mayor and members of the Misrata Municipal Council, and several senior officials. Local leaders hailed the new route as a milestone for the city and the central region, emphasizing its potential to revive trade, services, and economic activity.
With Misrata now added to its schedule, Turkish Airlines operates flights to three major Libyan cities, Tripoli, Benghazi, and Misrata, strengthening its position as one of the most important foreign carriers serving Libya.
The airline’s presence is expected to facilitate easier travel for Libyan citizens, business professionals, and students, while also offering new opportunities for tourism and investment.
Officials in Misrata said the launch reflects growing confidence in the city as a strategic hub. Located on the Mediterranean coast, Misrata is home to one of Libya’s busiest seaports and a thriving industrial sector, making improved air connectivity an essential step for expanding international partnerships.
The move also marks a positive signal for Libya’s aviation sector, which has faced years of setbacks due to conflict, limited infrastructure, and the grounding of much of the national carrier’s fleet.
