The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has reaffirmed its commitment to preventing further escalation in the Libyan capital, emphasizing that avoiding bloodshed and protecting civilians remains its top priority.

UNSMIL spokesman Mohamed El-Asaadi told Libya Al-Ahrar that the mission is actively coordinating with key Libyan bodies, including the Presidential Council, the Truce Committee, and the Security Arrangements Committee, to reduce tensions in Tripoli and support sustainable calm.

“Our goal is to avoid bloodshed in Tripoli and protect civilians,” El-Asaadi stated. “We are working closely with the Security Arrangements Committee to support negotiations and keep war away from the capital.”

El-Asaadi underlined that dialogue—not force—is the only viable path toward peace in Tripoli, highlighting the importance of mediation and de-escalation efforts in the face of rising instability.

“Dialogue is the sole route to resolving the situation in Tripoli—away from the language of arms,” he said.

The statement comes amid growing concern over recent military mobilizations in and around Tripoli. Armed groups loyal to rival factions have been seen positioning forces in key areas, prompting fears of a renewed outbreak of violence in the already fragile capital.

UNSMIL’s intervention reflects increased international attention to Libya’s deteriorating security situation, with Tripoli once again at risk of becoming a battleground between competing militias.

The UN mission has long supported a political solution in Libya, calling on all sides to engage in dialogue and uphold the ceasefire agreement signed in Geneva in 2020. Observers warn that the failure to contain tensions in Tripoli could jeopardize national reconciliation efforts and prolong the country’s decade-long instability.
