The Arab League has renewed its commitment to Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting all forms of foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs. The declaration came at the conclusion of the League’s 164th ordinary session of foreign ministers, chaired by the United Arab Emirates.
In its final communiqué, the Council reiterated adherence to all previous resolutions issued by the Arab League and the UN Security Council on Libya, including Resolutions 34, 907 and 9099. It voiced support for the efforts of the UN envoy aimed at advancing the political process and continuing the implementation of the 2015 Libyan Political Agreement. The League emphasised that these steps are crucial to preparing conditions for elections and unifying state institutions.
The ministers underlined the importance of achieving comprehensive national reconciliation, praising the joint efforts of the Arab League and the African Union to promote dialogue among Libyan factions. Such reconciliation, they said, is essential for meeting the Libyan people’s aspirations for stability and development.
The Council welcomed the work of the 5+5 Joint Military Committee, urging rapid implementation of its decisions to consolidate the ceasefire and unify security and military institutions under a single executive authority. It also stressed the importance of foreign forces, mercenaries and fighters leaving Libya in line with Security Council resolutions and within a defined timetable.
The League further highlighted the need to protect Libya’s financial resources and assets abroad, calling on all relevant countries to adhere to international resolutions and ensure these funds are preserved.
In its closing remarks, the Council commended the role of the UN Support Mission in Libya and tasked the Arab League Secretary-General with following up on implementation of these decisions, liaising with the UN envoy and Libyan authorities, and reporting back at the next session.
