The chairman of Italy’s San Donato Hospital Group (GSD) and president of the GKSD Investment Holding, Kamel Ghribi, visited Benghazi on Friday to discuss ways of strengthening Libya’s healthcare system through Italian expertise and collaboration.
The visit, which took place from September 9 to 12 at the invitation of local authorities, included a delegation of doctors, engineers, and administrators. The team conducted inspection tours of Benghazi Medical Center, the city’s new pediatric and maternity hospitals, the Oncology Center, and the Marj Medical Education Center.
According to Italian news outlet Italia Press, the discussions focused on updating facilities at Benghazi Medical Center, expanding medical training for Libyan professionals, and building new hospitals equipped with advanced technology. Plans also included developing telemedicine services to improve access to care across the country and offering remote medical consultations from Italian specialists.
Ghribi described the talks as encouraging, stressing his group’s readiness to bring Italian medical expertise to support Libya’s health sector. “There are very promising signs,” he said. “Our commitment is to contribute our experience and vision to developing the Libyan healthcare system, placing the best practices developed in Italy at the service of the country to ensure health, hope, and a future for its citizens.”
Libya’s health system has long suffered from years of conflict, underinvestment, and a shortage of trained personnel. Partnerships with international medical institutions are increasingly seen as essential to rebuilding infrastructure, modernizing hospitals, and training a new generation of healthcare professionals.
