The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has announced an online panel discussion addressing the crucial role of journalism in the country’s ongoing political process.
The event will feature leading Libyan media figures, including Mahmoud Shammam, Chairman of Al-Wasat Media Group; Zeinab Terbah, award-winning TV presenter and producer; and Ibrahim Al-Majbari, Director-General of the Libyan News Agency (LANA).
According to UNSMIL, the discussion will tackle pressing issues such as best practices for media coverage in a politically polarized environment, the role of journalism in promoting peace, and related challenges facing the press in Libya.
Speakers’ Backgrounds
Mahmoud Shammam is a prominent political writer and media figure, with an extensive career that includes serving as Managing Editor of the Arabic edition of Foreign Policy, Editor of Newsweek Arabic, and member of the board of Al Jazeera Network. He also served on the Middle East Advisory Council of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for 12 years, and was Head of Media at the Transitional Council’s Executive Office during 2011.
Zeinab Terbah brings more than 12 years of diverse experience across print, radio, and television journalism. She leads the “Towards a Solution” initiative and hosts the With Zeinab podcast, which provides constructive dialogue platforms to encourage compromise, reconciliation, and a unified national narrative.
Ibrahim Hedia Al-Majbari, Director of LANA, is a Libyan journalist and academic who has reported for numerous international agencies and held senior editorial roles in Libyan media institutions. He also serves as Chairman of the Pan-African News Agency.
