The Arabian Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO), one of Libya’s leading state-owned energy firms, has entered into talks with US-based HWB Company to launch a new water treatment project at the Messla and Nafoura oil fields in eastern Libya. The project is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

According to company officials, the initiative aims to improve production efficiency by separating crude oil from water and returning it to the production line. It will also eliminate waste ponds and produce water suitable for agricultural use, forming part of a wider plan to modernize fields and increase output capacity.

Established in 1979 and headquartered in Benghazi, AGOCO operates several of Libya’s most important oil fields, including Sarir, Messla, Nafoura, and Hamada. The company plays a central role in Libya’s crude exports through major terminals such as Tobruk’s Hariga Port.

Earlier this year, AGOCO achieved its highest daily output in years, reaching around 304,000 barrels per day (bpd). National oil production also climbed to approximately 1.23 million bpd in May 2025, signaling Libya’s steady recovery in the global energy market.

In addition, a new well labeled L096 recently came online, producing about 4,879 barrels of crude per day alongside 5.5 million cubic feet of natural gas. This development further strengthens AGOCO’s position as a key contributor to the Libyan oil sector, which remains vital for the country’s economy.

The joint Libya–US project underscores growing international cooperation in Libya’s oil and gas industry, with water management and sustainability becoming central to increasing production while reducing environmental risks.
