Libya’s Minister of Education in the Government of National Unity, Ali Al-Abed, met on Wednesday with US Cultural Attaché William Zeman to discuss expanding cooperation in the education sector and strengthening academic and cultural ties between the two countries.
The meeting, held in Tripoli and attended by Deputy Minister for Educational Affairs Masouda Al-Aswad and Director of International Cooperation Abdelqader Abu Shnaf, focused on identifying new areas of collaboration while reviewing existing programs supported by the U.S. Embassy.
According to the ministry, past cooperation included teacher training, capacity-building initiatives for English instructors, and partnerships with AMIDEAST to provide internationally recognized English-language certificates. These programs, officials noted, have already had a measurable impact on improving language education in Libyan schools.
Building on this foundation, both sides agreed to prioritize initiatives aimed at enhancing English-language teaching across all educational levels, expanding training programs for educators, and ensuring that English becomes more accessible for Libyan students. They also explored cooperation in early childhood education, with a focus on modernizing kindergartens, and in promoting inclusive education to integrate children with special needs more effectively into classrooms.
Another key topic was strengthening the Department of Educational Inspection, which plays a central role in quality assurance across Libya’s schools. Both parties stressed that better oversight and improved training for inspectors would help raise educational standards nationwide.
The discussions concluded with a commitment to set clear joint priorities and move quickly toward implementing practical programs. Officials highlighted that closer educational cooperation between Libya and the United States would not only benefit students and teachers but also foster stronger cultural ties and long-term mutual understanding.
