The Italian monitoring site ItaMilRadar has reported that a Greek Air Force aircraft carried out a reconnaissance mission over northern Libya and the central Mediterranean last week.
According to the observatory, the Embraer EMB-145H AEW&C aircraft took off on Monday from Elefsis Air Base near Athens on a surveillance mission in support of the European Union’s Operation Irini.
The aircraft, which is equipped with advanced airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) systems, flew over the Aegean Sea and the island of Crete before reaching its designated patrol area north of the Libyan coast.
In that region, the Greek Air Force’s early warning and surveillance center conducted both aerial and maritime monitoring to provide intelligence and coordination support for naval and air units operating under the EU’s Operation Irini.
Launched in March 2020, Operation Irini (Greek for “Peace”) is a European Union naval mission tasked with enforcing the United Nations arms embargo on Libya, preventing illegal weapons shipments, and enhancing maritime security across the central Mediterranean.
The Greek reconnaissance operation highlights renewed EU vigilance over the Libyan coast amid ongoing concerns about arms smuggling, mercenary movements, and violations of international sanctions.
