A young boy was killed and several civilians were injured on Monday when shells struck a residential area in the city of Al Zawiya, west of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, according to eyewitnesses.
The shelling hit the Al-Shurafa neighborhood, causing the death of a child identified as Muadh Marwan Al-Margani. His brother, Abdulrahman Marwan Al-Margani, was critically injured and remains in intensive care. Local sources confirmed that at least three other people, including a young man named Mohammed Hassan Al-Nisr, suffered varying degrees of injuries.
Emergency and medical teams were immediately dispatched to the scene to treat the wounded and assess the damage caused by the explosions. Witnesses described moments of panic among residents as shells landed near homes in one of the city’s densely populated districts.
The attack has once again drawn attention to the fragile security situation in Zawiya, where sporadic armed clashes between rival groups have repeatedly endangered civilians.
Despite previous ceasefire announcements and local mediation efforts, the city continues to experience outbreaks of violence, leaving residents in constant fear.
Local community leaders and civil society activists condemned the attack and urged authorities to intervene urgently to stop the targeting of residential neighborhoods.
They called for holding those responsible accountable and for strengthening efforts to protect civilians and prevent a further escalation of violence.
Human rights groups have warned that the repeated use of heavy weaponry in populated areas may constitute a violation of international humanitarian law, stressing that civilians must never be placed at risk in internal conflicts.
