Libya’s Minister of Economy and Trade in the Government of National Unity, Mohamed Al-Hwaij, has called for the resumption of direct flights between Libya and Morocco and the reopening of the Moroccan embassy in Tripoli to strengthen economic and trade relations between the two North African nations.
The call came during a meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Trade, Omar Hejira, held on the sidelines of the Turkey–Africa Forum in Istanbul on 17 October 2025. According to a statement from Libya’s Ministry of Economy, the talks focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and business exchange.
Al-Hwaij emphasised that restoring direct air connectivity and easing visa procedures would help facilitate the movement of businesspeople and investors, boosting private-sector cooperation and regional integration. He also urged both governments to support joint initiatives aimed at improving market access and promoting mutual investment opportunities.
The Libyan minister proposed organising a business forum in Morocco that would bring together Libyan and Moroccan entrepreneurs to explore new investment partnerships and expand trade volume. The event would be coordinated through the chambers of commerce in both countries to ensure broader participation from the private sector.
The Ministry of Economy described the meeting as part of Libya’s wider strategy to deepen regional economic ties, diversify its economy, and strengthen cooperation with Maghreb and African partners. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an open market environment and encouraging partnerships that serve mutual development goals.
