UN Welcomes Resumption of Municipal Elections in Libya

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has welcomed the resumption of municipal elections in 16 cities across eastern, central, and southern Libya, following their suspension in mid-August.

In an official statement, the mission praised the agreement reached between the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) and relevant authorities to resume what it described as an “important electoral process” aimed at restoring the legitimacy of local governance institutions.

UNSMIL encouraged all registered voters in these municipalities to participate actively and exercise their democratic right by casting their ballots. The mission also called on security institutions and local authorities to ensure a peaceful and transparent environment that enables voters to take part in the process freely and safely.

The UN mission further welcomed the planned resumption of municipal elections in other areas where voting had previously been postponed or disrupted. Registration in these municipalities is set to open on October 20, with polling expected to take place in February 2026.

According to UNSMIL, reopening voter registration in these areas represents “a crucial step” toward ensuring that all Libyans can participate in choosing their local leadership. The mission urged all eligible citizens to register to exercise their democratic rights in future elections.

The statement commended the HNEC and its staff for their “tireless work” under challenging conditions. Over the past year, the Commission successfully organized elections in 91 municipalities across Libya, demonstrating resilience and professionalism despite political and logistical obstacles.

UNSMIL also expressed appreciation to local security officers for helping create a conducive environment for voting and reaffirmed its continued commitment to supporting inclusive, credible elections that reflect the will of the Libyan people and strengthen the foundations of democracy.

The mission had previously criticized the suspension of elections in several municipalities under the authority of the government appointed by the House of Representatives, calling on all parties to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure conditions for safe and fair voting.
