The city of Benghazi has officially been designated as the permanent headquarters of the Maghreb Union of Journalists, following a formal signing ceremony held at the House of Representatives on Monday.

The agreement was signed between the Media, Culture and Civil Society Committee of the Libyan House of Representatives — representing the Libyan state as host — and the General Secretariat of the Maghreb Union of Journalists. The move comes in implementation of Libya’s decision to host the Union’s permanent headquarters on its territory.

This milestone follows months of preparation to activate the Union’s base, after its General Conference, held in Benghazi in April, unanimously approved the city as its permanent home. The decision was seen as recognition of Benghazi’s key role in supporting Maghreb journalism and promoting media cooperation across North Africa.

In a statement, the Media and Culture Committee said the establishment of the Union’s headquarters in Benghazi underscores Libya’s commitment to press freedom and the development of a professional and independent Maghreb media network. It added that the step honors the contribution of Libyan journalists in defending the freedom of expression.

The General Secretariat of the Maghreb Union of Journalists expressed its gratitude to Libya for hosting the Union, emphasizing that the move would strengthen professional cooperation among journalists in Maghreb countries and enhance coordination in addressing challenges facing the media sector.

The new headquarters is expected to begin operations soon, following the completion of the necessary administrative and organizational arrangements.
