Khalifa Haftar Calls for Unity & Libyan-led Solution

Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), has reaffirmed that resolving Libya’s political crisis must come from the will of its own people, supported by tribal unity, without reliance on any external initiatives.

Haftar made the remarks during a meeting with elders, tribal leaders, and notables from the central region at the Military City in Benghazi. The gathering was attended by the Prime Minister of the Parliament-appointed government, Osama Hammad, and Chief of General Staff, General Khalid Haftar, according to a statement released by the LNA’s General Command.

Tribal representatives expressed their support for the LNA and for national unity under a single Libyan framework, emphasising the need to preserve the country’s sovereignty and stability. Haftar said the military leadership “will remain Libya’s safety valve and will guarantee any agreement that unites Libyans.”

The meeting took place as the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) prepares to announce participants in a structured dialogue expected to address key national issues, including governance, security, the economy, and reconciliation.

Earlier this month, Haftar met elders and tribal figures from eastern, central, and southeastern Libya, where he criticised foreign interference, saying, “A map woven beyond our borders cannot build a free, sovereign state.” He urged all Libyan institutions and communities to assume “their historical responsibility” and find a national formula to end the ongoing political stagnation.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Osama Hammad recently filed a formal complaint with UN Secretary-General António Guterres against UN envoy Hanna Tetteh, accusing her of “serious inaccuracies” in her briefing to the Security Council and of overstepping the mission’s mandate by interfering in Libya’s internal affairs.

Haftar’s remarks reflect growing domestic calls for a Libyan-led solution to end years of division and restore state institutions.
