The Libyan Army’s General Staff of the Ground Forces, affiliated with the General Command, announced the death of two of its members and the injury of several others in a car accident that occurred during a chase near the Libyan–Algerian border.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, the General Staff said the soldiers were pursuing a group of smugglers when their military vehicle overturned in a rugged desert area close to the border. The statement confirmed that the injured troops were transported to Dar Al-Hikma Hospital in Benghazi, where they are receiving medical care and are reported to be in stable condition.
The two soldiers who lost their lives and the injured personnel were all members of the 121st Battalion, which operates under the 12th Infantry Brigade of the Libyan Army. The battalion is responsible for securing Libya’s southern and western borders, where smuggling networks are frequently active.
The General Command expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased and commended the efforts of its units in combating cross-border smuggling, human trafficking, and other illicit activities that threaten Libya’s national security.
The Libyan Army has intensified its patrols along the country’s borders with Algeria, Niger, and Chad in recent months as part of a broader campaign to curb the movement of smugglers and criminal groups exploiting the vast desert terrain.
Security experts note that the southern and western border zones remain a major challenge for Libyan authorities due to their size and limited surveillance infrastructure, making military patrols essential for maintaining stability and border integrity.
