Libyan Prime Minister of the Parliament-designate government, Osama Hammad, attended a ceremony in Benghazi marking the 68th anniversary of the founding of the Libyan Red Crescent Society. The event brought together senior government officials, diplomats, and representatives of international and regional organisations to celebrate the humanitarian organisation’s long-standing service to the nation.
The ceremony was attended by the Head of the Administrative Control Authority, Khaled Najm; Foreign Minister Abdulhadi Al-Hwaij; Interior Minister Issam Abu Zariba; Head of Internal Security, Major General Osama Al-Dressi; and senior health officials. The Secretary-General of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organisation also took part, alongside ambassadors and representatives from various institutions.
In his speech, Prime Minister Hammad expressed pride in the Red Crescent’s humanitarian achievements since its establishment, praising its dedication to the values of neutrality, independence, and unity. He emphasised that the organisation represents all Libyans without distinction and continues to serve under the national flag, embodying the spirit of solidarity and compassion.
Hammad honoured the sacrifices of Red Crescent volunteers who lost their lives during Storm Daniel, noting their heroic efforts in rescuing those affected by floods and landslides. He also highlighted the organisation’s key role in aiding displaced families during conflicts in Benghazi and Sirte, and its collaboration with the Libyan Armed Forces during the “Responders” emergency drill in Derna.
The Prime Minister stressed that all humanitarian and international bodies operating in Libya must adhere to national laws and coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure effective cooperation. He underscored that the Libyan Red Crescent remains the sole authorised national body for coordinating humanitarian efforts within the country.
Hammad concluded by extending gratitude to the organisation’s leadership and volunteers, commending their dedication to serving Libya with courage and compassion.
