Libya has been elected First Vice-Chair of the African Union’s Special Committee on Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), as the country takes part in the committee’s fifth ordinary session held at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.
The Libyan delegation was led by Dr. Mohamed Zidan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Expatriates Affairs, who also heads the ministry’s committee on irregular migration. The session opened on Thursday with the formal endorsement of Libya’s election to the executive bureau for a two-year term, ahead of assuming the full presidency in the next cycle.
During the meetings, the ministerial committee began reviewing experts’ reports and draft resolutions that will be submitted to the African Union Summit scheduled for February 2026. Discussions focus on challenges facing migrants and internally displaced populations across the continent, and on strengthening regional coordination to support humanitarian responses and develop long-term solutions.
Libya’s upcoming leadership role reflects its growing engagement with African partners on migration management and regional stability—particularly as the continent seeks more unified frameworks to address displacement, border pressures, and protection gaps affecting millions of people.
