A large-scale military marathon was launched in Benghazi as part of celebrations marking Libya’s 74th Independence Anniversary, drawing participation from more than 10,000 members of the Libyan National Army forces.
The Eighth Edition of the Al-Karama (Dignity) Marathon was held in the Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar Military City and organised under the supervision of the Military Sports Federation, according to Military Media Department.
The marathon formed part of a broader programme of national and sporting activities aimed at reinforcing unity, discipline, and physical readiness among members of the armed forces, while commemorating Libya’s independence from colonial rule.
Senior military and civilian figures attended the event, including General Abdullah Al-Thinni, the General Commissioner of the Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar Military City, alongside a number of senior commanders and officers from different military units.
Participants represented various branches of the Libyan armed forces, reflecting the scale of involvement and the symbolic importance attached to the marathon. Military organisers said the event highlighted the role of sport in strengthening cohesion, morale, and national identity within the armed forces.
The Dignity Marathon has become a recurring fixture in the military calendar, with organisers describing it as a platform to promote endurance, teamwork, and commitment to national values. The eighth edition was notable for its record turnout, making it one of the largest military sporting events held in eastern Libya in recent years.
