Sudanese refugees in Libya have received new humanitarian assistance as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) expanded its support to vulnerable communities affected by displacement and instability.

UNHCR said more than 1,600 Sudanese refugees in the southeastern Libyan city of Al-Kufra received essential core relief items to help them cope with harsh living conditions. The assistance included mattresses, blankets, kitchen sets, solar lamps, jerrycans, and hygiene kits, aimed at meeting urgent household needs and improving basic living standards.

The agency also distributed school bags to 640 Sudanese children in Misrata and Al-Kufra, reinforcing access to education for children displaced by conflict. UNHCR stressed that supporting education remains a priority, particularly for refugee children who face prolonged disruption to their schooling due to displacement and insecurity.

In addition to assistance provided to Sudanese refugees, UNHCR supported more than 570 members of Libyan host communities in Misrata with the same range of essential relief items. The agency said this approach is intended to strengthen social cohesion and ease pressure on local communities hosting large numbers of refugees and migrants.

According to UNHCR, the aid aims to reduce humanitarian vulnerabilities among both refugees and host populations, while addressing immediate needs linked to shelter, hygiene, and household safety. Solar lamps, in particular, were highlighted as a vital tool for improving safety and access to light in areas with limited electricity.

Libya remains a key transit and host country for refugees fleeing conflict, especially from Sudan, where ongoing violence has forced thousands to seek safety across borders. Humanitarian organisations have repeatedly warned that overstretched services and fragile infrastructure continue to pose challenges for displaced populations across southern and western Libya.

UNHCR reaffirmed its commitment to working with local authorities and partners to expand assistance programmes and ensure vulnerable groups receive life-saving support amid continuing regional instability.
