The Libyan Foreign Ministry of the parliament-designate government announced the unconditional release of all Libyan citizens who had been detained in Chad, following coordinated efforts involving the Libyan National Army (LNA), security authorities, and local leaders in the southeastern city of Al-Kufra.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the release came after a series of direct communications between the LNA General Command, the parliament-designate government, and Chadian authorities, with support from the Al-Kufra municipal council and local elders. The ministry described the outcome as a positive result of joint security and diplomatic coordination.
According to the statement, Chad’s Foreign Minister Abdallah Saber Fadl reaffirmed his government’s firm rejection of what he described as illegal actions carried out by certain Chadian individuals against Libyan citizens. He also stressed Chad’s commitment to protecting the safety and security of Libyans present on its territory.
The Libyan Foreign Ministry underlined that monitoring the situation of Libyan citizens abroad remains a core responsibility. It urged citizens to notify the ministry when travelling to areas experiencing tensions, to help ensure their safety and facilitate follow-up when needed.
The ministry added that the crisis committee formed to manage the incident had successfully completed its mission. It said the episode demonstrated the shared determination of Libya and Chad to address sensitive issues responsibly, stressing that individual violations do not reflect the depth of historical and brotherly relations between the two neighbouring countries. Official and community-level communication channels, it said, remain open to safeguard mutual interests.
Earlier, the Al-Kufra municipality had announced a temporary suspension of truck movement to and from Chad after reports of the abduction and torture of Libyan citizens inside Chadian territory. The municipality described the measure as precautionary until the safety of the detained citizens was guaranteed, while strongly condemning what it called a serious violation of human rights.
