Libyan Demonstrators Urge End to External Political Influence

Hundreds of Libyans gathered today outside the United Nations mission headquarters in Ganjour, demanding an end to foreign interference in Libya’s political affairs and calling for international accountability.

The protest saw demonstrators voicing strong opposition to what they described as external control over Libya’s governance, asserting that foreign meddling has prolonged the country’s political stagnation and undermined national sovereignty. Marchers carried signs advocating for an independent Libyan political path, free from outside influence.

Speakers at the rally criticized the role of international actors, particularly those they allege have validated transitional governments that lack clear popular mandates. Protesters argued that this has enabled prolonged political deadlock and the continued rule of administrations without electoral legitimacy.

In addition to denouncing foreign involvement, the crowd called for the swift establishment of a unified national government tasked with preparing the country for free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections. They emphasized that restoring full electoral processes is essential to returning power to the Libyan people.

Economic grievances were also central to the demonstration. Protesters criticized the ongoing smuggling and theft of Libyan oil resources, which they said continues with little international oversight and results in the depletion of the country’s primary source of national income. They demanded transparent investigations and sanctions against those responsible.

Demonstrators finished by issuing a warning to authorities and international bodies that failure to address their demands could lead to further popular mobilization, signaling that upcoming protests may escalate unless concrete political progress is made.
