Sirte International Airport has obtained formal authorization to commence operations after successfully meeting all required international aviation standards, following comprehensive inspections by civil aviation authorities and technical committees.

In an official statement, the airport confirmed that regulatory teams carried out detailed assessments of its infrastructure, safety systems, navigation equipment, and operational readiness, concluding that the facility complies with global specifications set by international aviation bodies.

The airport is expected to begin its first phase of operations with domestic flights, with plans to gradually expand to international services in a later stage. This phased launch aims to ensure smooth operational performance while strengthening Sirte’s position as a strategic aviation hub linking eastern, western, and southern Libya.

Officials said the opening of Sirte International Airport marks a significant milestone in the development of Libya’s air transport sector and reflects broader efforts to modernize airport infrastructure across the country. The project is also seen as a key component of national plans to enhance connectivity, facilitate passenger movement, and support commercial and humanitarian air traffic.

The statement added that the airport’s activation will contribute to boosting local economic activity, stimulating investment, and improving logistics and transport services in Sirte and surrounding regions. Enhanced air connectivity is expected to support trade, tourism, and business travel, while also strengthening the city’s role within national development corridors.

With its compliance with international safety and operational standards, Sirte International Airport is poised to play an important role in restoring confidence in Libya’s civil aviation network and in integrating the country more effectively into regional and global air routes.
