[2:32 pm, 23/01/2026] Ahmad El-Assasy: The Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Libya, Ahmed Al-Sahhaf, has announced the resumption of air operations to repatriate Iraqi migrants from Libyan territory as part of the voluntary return programme to their families in Iraq.
In press statements, Al-Sahhaf said that 197 Iraqi migrants are currently awaiting voluntary return. The first flight is scheduled to arrive in Baghdad at dawn on Friday, January 23, 2026, aboard a C-130 aircraft operated by the Iraqi Air Force, in line with directives issued by the Prime Minister of Iraq.
He explained that the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has coordinated a high-level national effort with all relevant authorities to implement the voluntary return process, ensuring the safety, security, and dignified transfer of citizens back to their homeland.
Al-Sahhaf also confirmed that the Iraqi Embassy in Tripoli continues its field and humanitarian work in cooperation with Libyan authorities and relevant international organisations, closely monitoring the conditions of Iraqi nationals and providing them with the necessary assistance and facilitation, in accordance with the Iraqi government’s commitment to protecting and supporting its citizens abroad.
The initiative forms part of Iraq’s broader efforts to address irregular migration and to ensure the safe and orderly return of its nationals from transit countries, particularly Libya, which remains a key hub for migrants attempting to reach Europe.
