Libya is set to host the African Table Tennis Cup, a major continental qualifier for the upcoming World Cup, according to a sports report published by Peoples Gazette.

The report said the tournament will be held in Benghazi from February 7 to 9, with matches hosted at Al-Nasr Sports Club. The event will bring together top male and female players from across Africa, all competing for qualification spots at the 2026 Table Tennis World Cup, scheduled to take place in Macau in March.

The report quoted Wahid Enitan Oshodi, President of the African Table Tennis Federation, as saying that Libya’s preparedness to host the championship reflects the steady growth and expanding reach of table tennis across the African continent. He praised the Libyan federation for its commitment and organizational efforts in staging the event.

According to the report, both the African and international federations view the championship as more than a competitive event. It is described as a celebration of diversity, unity, and excellence in African sport. Oshodi was quoted as saying that such gatherings embody the spirit of belonging to the wider “table tennis family” and reinforce shared values across the continent.

The report also cited Petra Sörling, President of the International Table Tennis Federation, who said the African Cup has become a strong indicator of the continent’s rising influence in world table tennis. She noted that improved competition standards, high-performance development, and stronger organizational capacity have significantly enhanced Africa’s presence on the international stage.
