A foreign woman was killed on Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross a highway in Tripoli, according to the Tripoli Security Directorate.
In an official statement, the directorate confirmed that the accident occurred on one of the capital’s main high-speed roads when the woman was hit by a passing vehicle as she crossed on foot.
Traffic patrol units assigned to the highway department responded immediately to the scene and began the required legal procedures. Officers from the forensic documentation unit also attended to record evidence and document the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Authorities stated that the driver involved in the accident voluntarily surrendered to the traffic department shortly after the incident.
He was subsequently referred to the competent traffic prosecution office to complete legal proceedings in accordance with Libyan law. Officials have not released further details about the victim’s identity pending notification of her family and the conclusion of initial investigative steps.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Tripoli, particularly on highways where vehicles often travel at high speeds. In recent years, traffic accidents on major roads have increased, with authorities frequently attributing the rise to speeding, limited pedestrian crossings, weak adherence to traffic regulations, and distracted driving.
Security officials reiterated their call for drivers to respect speed limits and exercise caution, especially in areas where pedestrian movement is common. They also urged pedestrians to avoid crossing high-speed roads except at designated and clearly marked points.
Investigations into the circumstances of the accident remain ongoing as prosecutors review the case and determine further legal action.
