Libya and Italy are advancing efforts to deepen cultural cooperation through new partnerships in cinema, theatre, and the arts, following high-level talks held in Tripoli.

Libya’s Minister of State for Women’s Affairs, Houria Al-Tarmal, met with the head of the General Authority for Cinema and Theatre, Abdulbasit Abu Qandah, alongside Italian Deputy Ambassador to Libya Riccardo Villa and Head of the Cultural Section at the Italian Embassy Salvatore Schermo. The meeting took place at the Prime Ministry headquarters as part of preparations for Libyan Women’s National Day.

The discussions focused on expanding joint cultural initiatives and strengthening programmes that promote mutual understanding between Libya and Italy. Officials reviewed mechanisms to develop shared artistic projects that could enhance Libya’s cultural presence while reinforcing people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Participants also examined the role of cultural leaders—particularly prominent women in literature and the arts—in promoting dialogue, openness, and social cohesion. The talks underscored culture as a strategic pathway for supporting sustainable development and building a more cohesive society.

Libyan officials view the meeting as part of a broader push to employ cultural diplomacy to strengthen bilateral relations and open new opportunities for cooperation in film, theatre, and creative industries. The initiative is also intended to elevate the role of Libyan women in the cultural scene and integrate female talent into international cooperation programmes.

Libya and Italy share decades-long historical ties marked by political and cultural shifts. In recent years, cultural engagement between the two nations has gradually resumed, particularly in archaeology, arts, and education. Observers say the latest move builds on this momentum and could contribute to rebuilding trust and expanding cultural exchange between the two Mediterranean partners.
